How to Make Your Dirt Bike Street Legal: Step-by-Step Guide

Check Your State’s Requirements

The law regarding street-legal bikes differs according to state. There are few states like California where there is strict law on emissions. There are few states where you require less modification to make the bike street-legal. It is wise to contact the local DMV and make yourself aware of the law before starting the modification.

Upgrade Your Bike’s Equipment

During the conversion keep in mind that the equipment needs to be according to the road safety standard. The following need to be kept in mind: 

Headlight need to be DOT-approved and have high/low beam function. The tail light needs to be operational always. There also need to be brake light. There need to be light to indicate the turn. There need to be at least one rare view mirror. Your bike needs to have street-legal horn. The tires need to be approved by DOT. The license plate need to be properly fixed and there should be a light to notice that in night. 

Install a Street-Legal Exhaust System

You need to comply with the noise and emission regulations when you opt to change your dirt bike to a street-legal one. The exhaust system need to be DOT/EPA approved. There are few states where you need to have spark arrestors for protection of wildlife. 

Add a Speedometer and Odometer

It is wise to check if the state law necessitates the use of speedometer and odometer. There are some modern kits where these are included. 

Get an Inspection 

Check state laws to make certain whether there is requirement of a vehicle inspection. If necessary have the bike inspected to see if all the norms are met. 

Apply for a Title and Registration

Once your bike is properly modified, visit your local DMV to apply for a street-legal title, registration, and license plate. You will likely need:

Proof of ownership (manufacturer’s certificate or bill of sale)

A completed application for registration

Proof of insurance

Inspection certificate (if required)
